What does this mean?
Zakat is not a fine or a gift for showing off. It is worship prescribed by Allah that cleanses the heart of stinginess and supports society.
In the Shafi'i school, if a child's property meets the conditions for zakat, the guardian pays it from that property; the child does not manage the calculation.
Important points to remember
- Conditions differ for cash, gold, trade goods, crops and other assets.
- In the Shafi'i school, qualifying monetary wealth held for a lunar year is generally subject to 2.5% zakat.
- Zakat al-Fitr is a separate form connected with the end of Ramadan.
- Recipients must belong to Quranically defined categories, so ask a scholar when unsure.
An everyday example
Keep records of savings and check whether zakat is due. If unsure, ask a scholar and give respectfully without embarrassing the recipient.
In shortZakat is a right in qualifying wealth that must reach eligible recipients, not unwanted leftovers.
