What does this mean?

'Ashura' comes from 'Asharah,' the Arabic word for ten, referring to the tenth day of Muharram.

On this day, Allah saved Prophet Musa (Moses) and the Children of Israel from Pharaoh. Prophet Musa fasted on this day in gratitude to Allah.

Important points to remember

Fasting on the Day of Ashura is a Sunnah (not obligatory) of great merit. The Prophet said it expiates the sins of the previous year.
The Prophet indicated that if he lived to the next year, he would fast both the 9th (Tasua) and 10th (Ashura) to differ from the Jews.
In the Shafi'i school, fasting only the Day of Ashura is valid, but adding the 9th or 11th is better.
This day also commemorates important events in the history of the prophets.

An everyday example

Many Muslims in Thailand fast on the Day of Ashura and perform additional good deeds such as sharing food with the poor or reading the Quran.
