What does this mean?
The word 'Eid' in Arabic means a recurring festival or celebration, while 'Fitr' means breaking the fast or returning to the normal state of eating.
Eid al-Fitr falls on the 1st of Shawwal and is one of the two Eids Muslims celebrate following the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Important points to remember
- Zakat al-Fitr must be paid before the Eid prayer, given as staple food (rice, dates, wheat) at about one sa' per family member.
- The Eid prayer is a strongly recommended Sunnah (Sunnah Mu'akkadah), performed as two rak'ahs without adhan or iqamah.
- It is recommended (mustahabb) to eat something before the Eid prayer, traditionally an odd number of dates.
- Eid is a day for increased sharing and visiting neighbors, relatives, and friends.
